for Bass Clarinet and Baritone Sax.
Counter-diction is a piece based on an improvisation that my friend, Joshua Haugen, and I did together in a practice room. The title came from mixing and matching two synonyms: counterpoint and contradiction, which fits with the idea in this piece that I like long, low lines and he likes more bombastic passages. The piece starts off with these two identities separate but they begin to meld together into one by the middle section, and the piece sort of comes full-circle at the ending. The result is an expansive exploration for baritone sax and bass clarinet.
